Gaithersburg school says no homework — just free reading

This Morning as I was coming into the school I head this news story, about a Gaithersburg school saying no to homework homework and replacing it with free reading.  "He had looked up research on homework effectiveness and learned that, generally, homework in elementary school isn’t linked to better academic performance — except for after-school reading."

I have always know the value and learning value of reading, having read hundreds of book when I was a child.  I even added that emphasis in our martial arts program.  In addition to having o earn 8 SKILLZ stripes (8 developmentally based requirements), children are required to earn stripes in Self-Discipline, practicing at home and reading. This encourages children through extrinsic rewards, (which will eventually evolve into intrinsic rewards.) to create great habits that will last a lifetime.

"My 8-year-old son has been training with Master Dow for the past year and a half and he loves it! The curriculum is structured and specifically designed by age and development level. This gives him reasonable expectations but challenging goals to achieve
